21:9 or 32:9: which one should you choose?

Two formats, two philosophies. The right answer depends mostly on what you do with your monitor.

It's the question that comes up most often, and the most honest answer is that there isn't a single one. 21:9 and 32:9 aren't two tiers of the same product — a "big" one and a "very big" one — but two different tools. Here's what you need to make the call.

The difference in one picture

A 21:9 monitor at 3440×1440 is about 2.39 times as wide as it is tall. A 32:9 at 5120×1440 is exactly double a standard 16:9 monitor at 2560×1440: it is literally two 1440p screens side by side, with no bezel in the middle.

For gaming: the gap is stark

This is the most important point, and the one most people discover after they've bought. Of the 217 games rated on WideBase, 87 earn top marks at 21:9, versus only 33 at 32:9. 21:9 isn't merely better served: it's better served by almost three to one.

The reason is simple: 21:9 has become the reference format studios test when they test anything other than 16:9. 32:9 is still a special case. Plenty of games technically accept it but handle it badly: UI stretched across the center of the image, field of view cropped vertically instead of extended out to the sides, cutscenes that snap back to 16:9 the moment a scene triggers.

Bottom line: on a 32:9, expect a real amount of tinkering. Across our 217 games, 65 need a mod or a community fix to reach their full potential. On a 21:9, that case is far rarer.

For movies: 21:9 wins outright

A 21:9 monitor at 3440×1440 has an aspect ratio of 2.389:1. Scope, the most common format in modern cinema, sits between 2.35:1 and 2.40:1. That's no coincidence: this screen shape was designed for movies. 34 of the 60 films in our database fill a 21:9 screen with no black bars at all.

On a 32:9, that number drops to zero. No commercial movie source is that wide: even scope covers only two thirds of it, and the rest is permanent black bars down the sides. If you're picking a monitor primarily to watch movies, the question is settled.

For work: here, 32:9 takes the lead back

This is where 32:9 fully justifies its existence. Two windows genuinely side by side, each the size of a full 1440p screen, with no bezel between them and no need to juggle two displays in your system settings. For development, video editing with a long timeline, finance with several charts open, or simply working in a document while keeping a video call visible, the benefit is immediate and doesn't depend on any software vendor.

Simulation — racing, flight — is the other area where 32:9 isn't a luxury: peripheral vision is part of driving, and a single panel replaces a three-monitor setup without the bezels sitting in the middle of the image.

The real performance cost

Rendering at 5120×1440 means 7.4 million pixels, 2 times more than a standard 1440p screen and 3.6 times more than a 1080p one. That's close to a 4K render (89% of the pixel count). 21:9 at 3440×1440 is far gentler: only 1.34 times a 1440p.

In practice, a 32:9 monitor calls for a graphics card in the same class you'd plan for 4K, whereas a 21:9 gets by with a 1440p-class build. That's an extra cost to factor into the total budget, on top of the price of the monitor itself.
