The best horror games in ultrawide
Wider means more to keep an eye on out of the corner of your eye.
Horror games have a peculiar relationship with ultrawide displays. In theory, seeing wider should dial the fear back: fewer blind spots, fewer off-screen surprises. In practice the effect is often the opposite — a hallway stretching across your whole periphery gives you more corners to watch, and the sense of being surrounded replaces the sense of being ambushed.
Technically, it's also a genre where the implementation matters: many horror games rely on fixed framing and lighting calculated for one precise aspect ratio. Widening the view can expose areas the level design never meant to show.
The titles kept here widen the view cleanly, without breaking their staging.

Phasmophobia 2020
Horreur 21:9 · Excellent 32:9 · Average21:9 works very well natively in Phasmophobia, without the pronounced fisheye effect that several players report at 32:9 on 5120x1440. The field of view stays consistent and exploring haunted houses at 3440x1440 is comfortable, with no noticeable image distortion.

Resident Evil 2 (2019) 2019
Horreur 21:9 · Excellent 32:9 · Very goodGood news at 3440x1440: that is precisely the limit beyond which cutscenes and menus start to pillarbox. At 21:9, everything displays full screen with no black bars, both in game and in scripted scenes, as confirmed by several player reports.

Resident Evil Village 2021
Horreur 21:9 · Excellent 32:9 · ExcellentRE Engine handles 21:9 as well as 32:9: no stretching of the image or the UI at 3440×1440, in exploration and during the confrontations with Lady Dimitrescu alike. Alien: Isolation 2014
Horreur 21:9 · Excellent 32:9 · Very good3440x1440 is precisely the resolution officially listed by the WSGF for Alien: Isolation, which makes 21:9 the best covered and safest format, even more so than 32:9. Resident Evil 3 (2020) 2020
Horreur 21:9 · Excellent 32:9 · AverageUnlike 32:9, which needs Flawless Widescreen to fix the FOV and the cutscenes, 3440x1440 works very well natively: players confirm on the Steam forums that cutscenes display in full 21:9 right from launch, with no black bars and no patch required. The tight field of view reported at 32:9 is also far less pronounced at this more moderate ratio.

Silent Hill 2 (2024) 2024
Horreur 21:9 · Very good 32:9 · Very goodGameplay gets true native Hor+ rendering at 3440x1440, just as at 32:9. But the pillarboxed cutscene problem is not limited to 32:9: it affects 21:9 by default as well, and Rose's community patch was in fact tested at an equivalent ratio (2560x1080) before being extended to wider resolutions.

Resident Evil 4 (2023) 2023
Horreur 21:9 · Very good 32:9 · GoodA pleasant surprise at 21:9: unlike 32:9, where the field of view is cramped and the UI stretches badly, the game behaves correctly out of the box at 3440×1440, with no need for the REFramework mod for exploration or fights against the villagers. Cutscenes, on the other hand, stay locked to 16:9 with black bars at the sides: they were framed that way from the design stage, a choice that affects every ultrawide format without exception, as confirmed by the community.
