The best FPS games in ultrawide

Wider peripheral vision, HUD pushed to the edges: the shooters that genuinely gain from an ultrawide display.

The shooter is the genre where an ultrawide display changes the most. A field of view widened at the sides means extra information in your periphery: an enemy flanking you, movement off to one side, a door opening outside the 16:9 frame. On a 32:9, the advantage almost feels unfair.

Almost, because that's also why some competitive games deliberately limit the format: they keep the same visible area whatever the screen, either by adding bars or by cropping vertically. Those titles aren't here — you'll find them in the games to avoid.

The shooters kept here genuinely widen the view (so-called "Hor+" behavior) and move their interface to the edges of the screen rather than stretching it.

    Counter-Strike 2 renders natively at 3440x1440 via the standard launch options, with a field of view that covers the full width of the screen and no black bars at all. Since 21:9 is the most widespread ultrawide ratio, the UI (radar, menus, scoreboard) is even better calibrated here than at 32:9.

    Since Valve's official 2020 update, 3440x1440 is handled perfectly, with a widened FOV and no black bars. The HUD can be locked to 4:3, 16:9 or 16:10 in the video options depending on your preference, and the Source engine's scripted sequences, which share the same camera as the gameplay, adapt naturally to the width of the screen.

    Portal 2 runs on the Source engine and offers excellent native Hor+ support at 3440x1440, with a well-positioned HUD and scripted transitions that display full-screen with no cuts. Only split-screen co-op requires a small edit to the splitscreen_config.txt file to adjust the aspect ratio of each half of the screen, a special case that does not affect the single-player experience.

The HUD stays readable across the full width without elements being pushed too far into the corners.

The stretched main menu flaw, classified as incomplete by the WSGF, applies specifically to the super ultrawide (32:9) category and does not affect this more common resolution.

    Battlefield 2042 retains its excellent native Hor+ support at 21:9, both in game and in the menus, with an FOV adjustable from 50 to 105° (44 to 88° in vehicles) and an option to exclude the scope from that setting. No black bars are reported, neither in matches nor in the intro cutscenes, confirming the Battlefield series' reputation as a benchmark for ultrawide screens, whatever the ratio chosen.

Exactly how the single-player campaign's cutscenes render at this ratio remains to be verified case by case, as some pre-rendered sequences in recent Call of Duty games are still framed in 16:9 regardless of the game ratio chosen.

    On id Tech 8, 3440x1440 is selectable directly in the video options and fills the screen in-game with no black bars, in line with the series' strong ultrawide track record (DOOM Eternal already offered solid native 21:9). Community reports confirm that exploration and combat work well overall, but the exact behavior of cutscenes at 21:9 could not be confirmed in detail, as reports are not specific enough on that point.

    Marvel Rivals caps its native rendering at roughly 2.39:1, a ratio that corresponds almost exactly to 3440x1440: unlike at 32:9, 21:9 therefore renders in full Hor+ with no vertical black bars at all, provided you push the FOV slider to maximum in the options. Cutscenes and victory screens, on the other hand, remain locked to 16:9 with pillarboxing, exactly as at 32:9, with no workaround available to date.

    The game natively applies Hor+ rendering adjustable through FOV and UI scale at 3440x1440, a far more common resolution than 5120x1440 and therefore better recognized in exclusive full-screen, where the detection issue reported at 32:9 is much less likely. Borderless windowed mode remains a reliable fallback in any case.

Cutscenes rendered with the game engine take good advantage of the width of the screen, but a few rare pre-rendered FMV sequences (faction screens) stay windowboxed, regardless of the aspect ratio chosen.

    The game natively supports 3440x1440 during gameplay, with a good widening of the field of view. By default, cutscenes still show up tiny or pillarboxed, as at 32:9; the community tool Max Payne 3 21x9 Fix, originally designed for this exact aspect ratio before being extended to 32:9, corrects the problem and restores a coherent full-screen presentation to narrative scenes, the tool being available via PCGamingWiki and particularly well suited to 21:9.

    Without a mod, RoboCop: Rogue City already shows a reduced field of view and small vertical black bars during dialogue at 3440x1440, an issue inherited from the same engine behavior documented at 32:9. RoseTheFlower's free fix corrects the FOV, including while aiming, adjusts the weapon display and removes the black bars from dialogue scenes.

    Destiny 2 is rated Gold by the Widescreen Gaming Forum for its native 21:9 support, with a FOV that extends horizontally with no black bars and a HUD designed for wide screens, a result at least as solid as at 32:9. Exactly how the story cutscenes render at this ratio remains to be verified, though, since some of Bungie's scripted sequences use cinematic framing that could introduce occasional black bars regardless of resolution.
