The best RPGs in ultrawide
Open worlds built to be looked at — and interfaces that keep up.
The RPG is the genre that benefits most from an ultrawide display, for a different reason than the FPS: here it isn't the tactical edge that counts, it's the scenery. An open-world vista spread across 3440 or 5120 pixels of width produces a cinematic effect that 16:9 simply can't reach.
The risk in this genre lies elsewhere: the interface. An RPG throws dense inventories, skill trees and dialogue windows at you. Poorly adapted, those elements stretch across the full width and become a chore to read — you end up sweeping your eyes across the screen just to compare two items.
The games gathered here handle both: the view widens, and the menus stay centered and readable.

Baldur's Gate 3 2023
RPG 21:9 · Excellent 32:9 · ExcellentNo setup required: 3440×1440 works from the first launch, with an interface that stretches cleanly and a tactical camera that makes good use of the extra space to survey the battlefield. Real-time dialogue uses the full width of the screen; only a few pre-rendered intro videos stay in 16:9, as in 32:9.

Cyberpunk 2077 2020
RPG 21:9 · Excellent 32:9 · ExcellentAt 3440×1440, Cyberpunk 2077 runs natively with no config-file tweaking required: a convincing widened field of view, and a recentered HUD that stays perfectly legible at the edges. The first-person cutscenes, already solid in 32:9, fill the screen here without any of the artifacts tied to the extreme width of that format.

Path of Exile 2 2024
Action-RPG 21:9 · Excellent 32:9 · AvoidOn Path of Exile 2, 21:9 is exactly the maximum ratio Grinding Gear Games officially allows, and the server serialization limit that blocks 32:9 does not apply here. The game therefore delivers a clean widened FOV, with no black bars and no missing content at the edges at this resolution.

4

Diablo IV 2023
Action-RPG 21:9 · Excellent 32:9 · Average21:9 is exactly the limit Diablo IV officially supports, unlike 32:9, which stays restricted with black bars. On a 3440×1440 screen, the field of view widens without distortion, the HUD and compass stay well placed, and in-engine cutscenes follow the same wide format.
-
5

Monster Hunter Wilds 2025
Action-RPG 21:9 · Excellent 32:9 · GoodUnlike 32:9, where the REFramework mod is needed to extend the image and cutscenes revert to 16:9 with black bars, 3440x1440 is supported directly from launch: just select the native resolution in the display options. Cutscenes then display in full panoramic format, just like exploration and combat.

6

Kingdom Come: Deliverance II 2025
RPG 21:9 · Excellent 32:9 · ExcellentThe game automatically applies Vert+ scaling at 3440x1440, gaining genuine peripheral field of view rather than losing image at the top and bottom. Cutscenes display full-screen following the launch patch that fixed their presentation.
-
7

Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered 2024
Action-RPG 21:9 · Excellent 32:9 · Very goodThe remaster displays 3440x1440 natively during exploration and combat, and unlike 32:9, which needs the community SUWSF tool to remove pillarboxing, 21:9 gets a built-in option: turning off "Cinematic Letterboxing" in the display settings is enough to show cutscenes and dialogue full-screen. It is a good example of a native compatibility ceiling set at 21:9 by the studio, with super ultrawide not benefiting the same way.
-
8

Final Fantasy XVI 2024
Action-RPG 21:9 · Excellent 32:9 · Very goodUnlike 32:9, which requires the FFXVIFix patch to remove the black bars, 21:9 is natively supported by the game: official support stops precisely at that ratio. At 3440×1440, real-time cutscenes therefore already display full-screen with no setup at all, with a correctly positioned HUD.

9

Disco Elysium 2019
RPG 21:9 · Excellent 32:9 · GoodDisco Elysium received an official update adding native 21:9 support, far more polished than the workaround required at 32:9: no stretching, no menus stuck at 16:9, and the entire UI and dialogue system takes advantage of the wide format. The Ultrawide Fix community patch, essential for reaching 5120x1440, is completely unnecessary here since ZA/UM built this ratio in directly.

10

Mass Effect Legendary Edition 2021
Action-RPG 21:9 · Excellent 32:9 · GoodUnlike 32:9, which causes visual glitches and pillarboxed dialogue scenes without the Flawless Widescreen mod, 3440x1440 enjoys genuine official support added after the Legendary Edition launched, enabled directly in the graphics options. Cutscenes and conversations use the full screen width with no black bars or cropping, notable enough that the specialist press highlighted it as a point in the game's favor on ultrawide displays.

11

Dragon Age: The Veilguard 2024
Action-RPG 21:9 · Excellent 32:9 · AverageThe game officially supports 21:9, with the same "Cinematic Aspect Ratio" option as at 32:9 to remove the black bars from cutscenes, which then display properly at 3440x1440. The bug acknowledged by EA, which makes geometry and textures flicker during certain end-game missions by exceeding the engine's object display limit, is specifically tied to the extreme width of 32:9 and has not been reported at this more moderate format, making the experience considerably more reliable.

12

Nioh 2 - The Complete Edition 2021
Action-RPG 21:9 · Excellent 32:9 · Good21:9 is exactly the resolution Nioh 2 officially supports out of the box: the field of view widens correctly in Hor+ and the UI stays reasonably well positioned. It is only when pushing to 32:9 that the Nioh2Resolution mod becomes necessary and that cutscenes show black bars.
-
13

Starfield 2023
RPG 21:9 · Excellent 32:9 · AverageGood news for 21:9: Bethesda supports 3440×1440 natively, without the ini file edit required beyond that ratio. The pillarboxing reported at 32:9 doesn't show up here, and HUD placement (compass, dialogue) stays correct with no manual adjustment via fSafeZoneXWide.
-
14

Path of Exile 2013
Action-RPG 21:9 · Excellent 32:9 · GoodPath of Exile still works natively at 21:9: Grinding Gear Games capped the maximum allowed ratio at around 2.4:1 after the monster spawning bugs seen at 32:9, a ceiling that leaves 21:9 comfortably in the safe zone. The FOV widens correctly, the UI stays readable and cutscenes display without issue.

15

Elden Ring 2022
Action-RPG 21:9 · Very good 32:9 · Very goodFromSoftware never added real ultrawide support, 21:9 included: without intervention, the game shows black bars even at 3440×1440. Flawless Widescreen solves the problem by widening the render and adjusting the field of view, real-time cutscenes included, with a visually cleaner result than in 32:9, where the stretching is more pronounced.
-
16

Black Myth: Wukong 2024
Action-RPG 21:9 · Very good 32:9 · Good21:9 happens to be the game's official native limit: unlike 32:9, which needs the WukongTweak plugin to lift the resolution cap, 3440x1440 displays without black bars right from launch. Part of the community still finds the field of view a bit tight, a recurring complaint about the game even at 16:9.

17

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered 2025
RPG 21:9 · Very good 32:9 · Very good3440x1440 is officially supported and the Unreal Engine 5 open world fills the screen properly with no black bars. The dialogue camera inherited from the original Gamebryo engine, however, known for locking up or framing too close to characters' faces, still leaves something to be desired in ultrawide: several players report a frozen or badly framed conversation camera.

Monster Hunter: World 2018
Action-RPG 21:9 · Very good 32:9 · Good3440x1440 is precisely the native limit officially handled by Monster Hunter: World, with no mod required to enjoy it in game. The field of view widens correctly and hunting feels smooth at this ratio.

19

Divinity: Original Sin 2 2017
RPG 21:9 · Very good 32:9 · Very goodDivinity: Original Sin 2 keeps its WSGF silver medal at 3440x1440: exploration and combat benefit from well-designed native Hor+ rendering, with a more flexible UI than at 32:9, where some elements stayed stuck in the corners. Pre-rendered (FMV) cutscenes, on the other hand, keep a fixed format with black bars on the sides whatever ultrawide ratio you use, unlike in-engine scenes, which adapt well.
-
20

Hogwarts Legacy 2023
Action-RPG 21:9 · Very good 32:9 · Very goodNative 21:9 support is excellent in exploration and combat at Hogwarts alike, with no stretching or distortion at 3440×1440. As at 32:9, though, some cutscenes automatically drop back to 16:9 with black bars before returning to the wide format, behavior that's identical whatever ultrawide ratio you use.

21

Dragon's Dogma 2 2024
Action-RPG 21:9 · Very good 32:9 · Very goodOn RE Engine, 3440x1440 is selectable natively and the open world fills the screen well during exploration. Community discussions mention badly framed cutscenes in ultrawide, a known problem on other RE Engine games such as Resident Evil 4 Remake, but its exact extent at 21:9 could not be confirmed with certainty during this research.
-
22

Avowed 2025
Action-RPG 21:9 · Very good 32:9 · Very goodAt 3440x1440, exploration gets the same widened Hor+ FOV as at 32:9, with the same fairly pronounced fisheye effect and a compass that does not recenter. Cutscenes and dialogue revert to 16:9 pillarboxing by default, an issue that affects every ultrawide format without distinction, 21:9 included.
-
23

Assassin's Creed Valhalla 2020
Action-RPG 21:9 · Very good 32:9 · Very goodAt 3440x1440, Valhalla behaves exactly as it does in 32:9 but without any of the constraints: the open world renders natively in Hor+, with no cropping and no FOV loss. The free Fix Cutscenes Ultrawide mod also works at this ratio and eliminates the black bars on most in-engine cutscenes.

24

Dark Souls: Remastered 2018
Action-RPG 21:9 · Very good 32:9 · GoodUnlike 32:9, which requires Flawless Widescreen and a dedicated UI fix, Dark Souls Remastered handles 21:9 natively: the field of view widens correctly and menus stay readable with no tinkering. Boss health bars, a problem at 5120×1440, cause no obvious trouble at 3440×1440.
-
25

Dying Light 2 Stay Human 2022
Action-RPG 21:9 · Very good 32:9 · Very goodGameplay at 3440x1440 gets the same native Hor+ rendering and recentered HUD as at 32:9, a real success for parkour exploration. But as at 32:9, menus and cutscenes stay pillarboxed at 16:9 by default, so the problem is not limited to the most extreme ratios.
-
26

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth 2024
JRPG 21:9 · Very good 32:9 · Very goodThe playable portion takes advantage of 3440x1440 natively, exactly as at 32:9, with a wider view of Hawaii and Yokohama. But every cutscene displays pillarboxed by default, since those vertical black bars depend not on the exact width of the display but on a presentation locked to 16:9 for those sequences.

27

V Rising 2024
Action-RPG 21:9 · Very good 32:9 · Very goodV Rising works right away at 3440x1440 with no settings and no mods, with the same brief black bars on the main menu as at 32:9, which disappear as soon as you reach character creation. The visibility advantage on enemies and resources is still there but noticeably less pronounced than at 32:9, since the extra width of view is more modest at this ratio.
-
28

Lies of P 2023
Action-RPG 21:9 · Very good 32:9 · Good21:9 benefits from the same Unreal Engine 4 as 32:9, with exploration and combat running natively in Hor+. The HUD, pinned to the corners at 32:9, is perfectly readable again at this more moderate ratio.
-
29

Tales of Arise 2021
Action-RPG 21:9 · Very good 32:9 · Very goodEven at 3440x1440, Tales of Arise offers no native support: the game runs at 16:9 with black bars on either side and no option in the menus, as many players have confirmed on the Steam forums. The free community patcher 'A Simple Story' solves this in one simple step, widening the field of view and removing the pillarboxing both in game and in cutscenes.

30

Remnant II 2023
Action-RPG 21:9 · Very good 32:9 · AverageUnlike its uneven support at 5120x1440, Remnant II offers more solid native support at 3440x1440, 21:9 being the most common ratio and the one Gunfire Games has tested most thoroughly. Some players still report slight distortion at the edges, adjustable via the FOV slider, and the HUD stays fixed in place with no repositioning option.
How this list is built
It filters the RPG, Action-RPG and JRPG genres by a 21:9 rating of at least "Very good". The individual statuses (format support, cutscenes, mod required) are explained on the Method page. Each entry links to its full French page, which carries its sources — English versions are on the way.
